So this past Friday I had the opportunity to give a performance downtown as part of PARK(ing) Day 2014 in Austin.
I decided that I would revive a piece I put on at FronteraFest a few years ago about a guy who’s desperately trying to find a job and is trying to convince the audience to hire him.
When I did this at the fringe festival I had a projector and a screen behind me that I could use as a kind of crutch (the visuals were entertaining in and of themselves and they also took the attention off me).
I knew I couldn’t rely on electricity at the outdoor performance so I modified the slides and put them on a flip chart. I also invested in a battery powered amp and a mic so I could be heard over the traffic.
The performance was cancelled at the last minute because of stormy weather. I was sad to miss the opportunity (a “growth” experience, I guess), though also relieved because I was pretty damn nervous about how it might be received.
However, I now have this amp and mic and realize that one of my dreams (“dreams”) of being more mobile and maybe doing a performance at a café or something sometime is more attainable.
Not sure when or if I’ll do it, but happy to have another option at hand.
