Toying with the idea that people could rent out their homes for small fees to host intimate productions to help fill the gap left by dwindling theater options in town.
Maybe something similar to an airbnb concept but for performance art.
Intrigued by the idea of hosting 15 or 20 people at my place and trying to put on a play in the sparse space. What would I need? For starters:
- Chairs
- A sign
- Some kind of light setup (at least on/off)
- T-shirts
- Beer & wine for suggested donations
- A great script
- Awesome actors
- A good attitude
So there. Watch this space!
We have many of these things because this is how we started out.
Ah, that’s good to know. So I’m hearing 1) This may not be the most original idea ever; 2) You might have some items I could maybe rent from you if I want to try this thing out? I’ll be in touch!
I think the AirBnB version of it is very original. If you could basically have the show in a different house each night you get over the biggest obstacle we ran into – it’s hard to find people who don’t mind having their house being taken over by strange people for 6-12 nights. It could also easily incorporate places like bars into the run, since they’re usually up for 1 or 2 night rentals, but not the multiple weeks theater companies are used to.
And we had some other interesting ideas around traveling shows. We’re starting to wonder if the “theater in a big empty room” idea is a bit played out for us.
We should talk.
Hmm, cool. Yeah, I’ve had a couple of bar discussions with a friend about this too.
There are house concerts, and there’s the dogma film movement. Maybe there could be the small-scale, movable local theater movement where a few houses or bars host over several nights. I would host a small production at my place for a weekend.
I don’t know. Would take some more organization (there’s Mi Case that FF runs too); I feel like it could come together with a few game people. Thinking…
Looks like there’s more demand for this sort of space.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing.
