This is mostly a note to self, I guess (what else is new?), but as I’ve begun to make the November benefit more public, I’ve had a couple of people approach me about other groups around town that are working with families with autism, and it’s making me wish I’d been more aware of them earlier. Still, it’s all a learning experience and fodder for potential future shows or actions to be a part of.
Nice guy, fantastic writer, advertising guru and ScriptWorks member Raul Garza let me know about Growing Roots, which is a local org that helps families with kids with special needs, often with autism. He’s on the board and they look like they really put effort into strengthening families in often overwhelming situations.
And yet ANOTHER nice guy and past and future theater collaborator Luke Wallens told me about the Building Connections program at the Hideout Theatre which, among other things, runs improv classes for kids with Asperger’s and autism.
Both these seem like great groups that get at the heart of what I was trying to do: focus on local organizations that can improve the day-to-day lives of families struggling with autism.
My goal was to try to connect with and reach out to some of these local groups, remembering how difficult it can be to keep things in balance when situations are unpredictable and out of control.
Anyway, let’s see what else comes up in the next couple of months, yo.
(yeah, that’s right; yo)
