I just got back from meeting with Dr. Laurence Becker in Hyde Park who has been working with artists from around the world who have severe forms of autism.
His house is full of art pieces that are often extraordinary and compelling, and he’s a fountain of knowledge and information (and he’s a fascinating guy himself to boot).
One of the better-known artists he’s worked with (and made a documentary about) is Richard Wawro from Scotland who was legally blind and made art with oil crayons before his early death in 2006. You can see more about his life and his artwork here.
Anyway, there are several other phenomenal artists Dr. Becker’s worked with too, and he’s offered to let us show some of this artwork at the theater gallery during the week we have the space in November, and even offered up some prints that we could share with audience members if they give an extra donation, for example.
I’ve gotta think about the logistics of everything and how best to display it and use it, but I think it’s going to add some weight to the proceedings (which we could probably use) and maybe even bring in another group of audience members who wouldn’t have otherwise come.
More on this stuff and the overall lineup and state of things later, but things are feeling pretty good right now…
